Details:   Shot by the IRA as he and his wife visited the site where they were building their retirement bungalow. His wife was seriously injured in the attack and a nurse who had stopped to render first aid had her car rammed by the gunmen. The IRA described the injury to Mrs Gilmore as 'regrettable' and said her husband had been killed because he worked for a firm which carried out work for the security forces and not because he had previously been in the UDR. His firm denied that it did security force work. Bertie was buried on his 50th birthday. His wife was too ill to attend the funeral. Left the Regiment in 1987 - 53rd ex UDR soldier to be killed. |
