Details:
One of three soldiers on vehicle patrol killed by an IRA bomb near Castlewellan. The bomb containing one ton of explosives was triggered by a command wire from a derelict house. Four other soldiers were injured. The explosion left a crater 13 feet deep and 30 feet across damaging water pipes. Emergency services worked waist deep in water to rescue the dead and injured. Private Richard Wilson and Private Roy Smyth were also killed. His mother campaigned for years to have his name inscribed on the cenotaph in Downpatrick and was eventually successful. 101st UDR soldier to be killed.
