Details:   Died of wounds sustained when the PIRA detonated a 200 lb command wire bomb, concealed behind hoarding at a building site on Royal Ave, Belfast. Both Pte Starrett and Pte James Cummings, who died at the scene, were on duty at the security gates near the junction with Royal Ave and North Street, Belfast. A second bomb intended for police and soldiers conducting a follow up operation failed to explode and was defused by the ATO. Frederick was a lay preacher and a religious scholarship was established in his memory. He had joined the Regiment just four months earlier. 172nd UDR soldier to be killed. |
