Details:   One of three soldiers on vehicle patrol killed by an IRA bomb near Castlewellan. The bomb containing one ton of explosives was triggered by a command wire from a derelict house. Four other soldiers were injured. The explosion left a crater 13 feet deep and 30 feet across damaging water pipes. Emergency services worked waist deep in water to rescue the dead and injured. Private Richard Wilson and Private James Cochrane were also killed. 100th UDR soldier to be killed. |
