Details:   Killed in an explosion detonated by command wire. He and a colleague, Pte Frederick Starrett, who died from his wounds, were on duty at the security gate in the city centre at the junction of Royal Ave and North Street. The PIRA had planted a 200 lb bomb behind hoarding at a building site on Royal Ave which was detonated by command wire. A second booby trap, intended for police and soldiers conducting a follow up operation failed to explode and was defused by ATO. 171st UDR soldier to be killed. |
