Details:   Killed by a proxy (human) bomb attack at a border check point. He was posthumously awarded the Queen's Gallantry Medal and 'died a hero' trying to save his colleagues by running to warn them rather than running to safety. The man forced to drive the bomb was ordered by masked men to drive to where the soldiers would be and that if he did not comply two of his sons would be shot. He was to tell the soldiers that they had 40 minutes to get clear but within seconds of reaching the checkpoint the bomb exploded. Cyril had only six weeks left to serve and had been recently deployed to Northern Ireland for the first time. 2nd Ranger to be killed. |
